With support from the EU and Awards For All, Belfast based intercultural football team, World United, is running an IFA endorsed anti-racism Unity Cup 7aside football tournament at Seaview, home of Crusaders Football Club, in North Belfast, on Sunday, 30 August from 12pm-4pm, involving a diverse range of football teams all supporting World United’s anti-racism ethos and South African community group Kliptown Youth.
Eight teams, including several World United teams (including Players from all over the world from East Belfast to the Ivory Coast), two Chinese Teams, a North Belfast Cross Community Team, an Iranian Team and a Football For All Volunteer Team will play for the IFA endorsed Unity Cup which has been running every summer since 2004 as part of the IFA’s EU funded Football For All Project. World United are the reigning champions after overcoming a Northern Ireland Football For All Fans Team in penalties at the final in the Oval, home of Glentoran FC, last summer. This year World United is running the Unity Cup for the first time as competition organisers with support from the IFA and Awards For All. With the World Cup coming up next summer World United have decided to link in with the Kliptown Youth Program, which uses sport, dance and music as a hook to encourage young people in South Africa to stay in education. IFA Head of Community Relations and World United Player, Michael Boyd, explains, “The Unity Cup is a celebration of diversity through the sport of Football and is being used as a platform to call for football teams across Northern Ireland to donate their old football kits to the Kliptown Youth Program, who have adult, under 17, under 16, under 15 and under 14 football teams. With support from Reach EPS Limited World United is leading by example donating a brand new adult World United kit and selecting Kliptown Youth as their World Cup charity partner”. Michael added, “I would like to thank Crusaders FC for their support. Crusaders have supported World United and our Football For All campaign from the beginning and we are very grateful to them for their support”. If your team would like to donate their old kit to the Kliptown Youth Program contact Maria Wilson at mwilson@irishfa.com to organise collection.
