A provocative and wholly unique hybrid of dance, theatre and music, FELA! explores the world of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
FELA! – the award-winning Broadway and London production – is broadcast live to cinemas around the UK and worldwide on 13 January, continuing the second season of NATIONAL THEATRE LIVE. In Belfast the screening will take place in Queen’s Film Theatre.
Using his pioneering music (a blend of jazz, funk and African rhythm and harmonies), FELA! reveals Kuti’s controversial life as an artist and political activist. Featuring many of Fela Kuti’s most captivating songs and Bill T Jones’s visionary staging, this original new creation has come via Broadway to the National Theatre. In New York it was the winner of three 2010 Tony Awards including Best Choreography.
Sahr Ngaujah (who won an Obie Award for his performance as Fela Kuti) leads the cast for the London production, which also includes Paulette Ivory and Melanie Marshall.
