FOOTBALL FEST NI | 28 MAY | SHORTS RECREATIONAL CLUB

leafletA5-v2-frontCharter for Northern Ireland are hosting an anti-racist and anti-hate crime 7-a-side football festival titled ‘FootballfestNI’, where over 400 people from local communities and various ethnic minorities will be participating, on Saturday, 28th May, 2011 at Shorts Recreational Club’s grounds on the Holywood Road in East Belfast.

This tournament is one aspect of our overall strategy to address the issues around ethnic minorities who come to Northern Ireland to work and welcome those families who want to integrate into Northern ireland life. It is a continuation of our work to address ‘Hate Crime’s’ over the last four years where we have successfully organised more than twenty events and brought together people from various ethnic minorities to interact with local people from Northern Ireland.

Many of the participants will be traveling considerable distances including Dublin, Limerick, and Donegal and Omagh and there will also be teams from other parts of Northern Ireland participating. The festival will adopt a fully inclusive approach with groups from a whole range of ethnic backgrounds including; African, Polish, Chinese, Travelers and Indian. There will also be groups from a cross community bases who are addressing issues of sectarianism and who are actively pursuing peace and building a new future for our society. The whole programme will be deeply embedded in the local community.

The tournament consists of 20 teams plus a section for four Woman’s teams (10 members in each team) and the first games will kick off at 11.00am. There will be four groups of five teams and the day will culminate with the winners and runners-up playing in a Cup and Plate final. We envisage the tournament ending around 4.30pm or 5.00pm.  It is hoped that we can cater to feed the traveling teams at the club house separately as part of their entrance fee’s with Hamburger and chips, light refreshments being on sale during the day for visitors and supporters.

This will be followed by a night of entertainment with live music and special guests. A big screen will be erected to show live coverage of the Champions League finals that evening. There will be a bar and refreshments.

We are supported in this event by Unite Against Hate, Sport Against Racism Ireland, Arts Council for NI, Community Relations Council for NI, Equality Commission, Belfast City Council and Unite Union, PSNI, Belfast Unemployed Resource Centre, John Hewitt Bar and many others.
