Northern Ireland Community Relations Week will take place from 23 to 27 May. The theme of CR Week 2011 is ‘Division – no quick fix’ and over 150 events are planned right across Northern Ireland.

Derry City Council is hosting an international conference at the Guildhall from Monday, 23 May to Thursday, 26 May to learn from other cities emerging from conflict. Belfast City Council is examining what needs to be done to grow Belfast as a shared city at an event in Belfast City Hall on Wednesday, 25 May. Learning from the past is the focus of many events including the REAL Project’s conference on sectarianism and racism in Belfast on Friday, 27 May which poses the question Are we winning? The power of sport to promote respect for diversity will be highlighted by Peace Players International – Northern Ireland when they launch a Game of Three halves for Gaelic, rugby and soccer. Understanding the past is a theme for many events. Crossfire Trust in Keady are launching a Darkley stories booklet collected from local people affected by the past. Omagh Support and Self Help Group with the Shared City Project in Derry are launching a book and DVD ‘Remembering the Past Looking to the Future’.
Duncan Morrow, CRC Chief Executive said: “Living in a shared society is a promise and a challenge. It requires political leadership and the whole community to be engaged. The events of Community Relations Week demonstrate that people are willing to challenge sectarianism and racism and talk about what must be done to create a more open and shared society.”
A full listing of Community Relations Week events can be found HERE and printed programmes can be obtained from local libraries.
